Music Monday – Week 1

Happy Monday! I have noticed that people are starting to look for ideas for Christmas gift patterns to start working on. The Create you own music blanket makes a great gift for the musicians in our lives. To make this blanket you will be making blocks  with different music motifs and joining them together to create a blanket. Starting today  once a week for the next 12 weeks I will be adding a new music motif block  for you to make. The pattern is written for worsted weight yarn, using a 4mm hook. You can use any yarn you choose with any hook you would like. Just keep in mind that changing the hook and yarn will give you different measurements that what is writing in the pattern. Don’t forget to leave a comment and let me know what colors you have chosen for yours.

Create your Own Music Blanket

Pattern Design by Kris Hill

Materials needed:

4 mm crochet hook or any size hook you are comfortable working with.

Worsted weight yarn, I used Caron Simply soft.

Scissors

Yarn needle

This pattern is written in US terms

Stitches used:

CH = Chain

SC = Single Crochet

HDC = Half Double Crochet

Bobble = Half Double Crochet Bobble

Gauge Swatch: 2 inches across, 1 inch up and down.

Chain 9

Row 1. HDC in the second chain from hook and in each chain across. You will you have 8 stitches

Rows 2 and 3: Chain 1, turn, HDC in each stitch across. The chain 1 does not count as a stitch.

Special Stitch:

Half Double Crochet Bobble stitch: This stitch is worked from the wrong side. Yarn over, pick up a loop in stitch, draw through first 2 loops on hook, you will still have 2 loops on hook, yarn over, pull up loop, draw through first two loops on hook, you will have 3 loops left on hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, draw through first two loops on hook, you will have 4 loops on hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, draw through first two loops on hook, yarn over draw through all 5 loops on hook. Bobble stitch is now complete.

Pattern Notes:

  1. Each finished block is 10 x 12.5 inches.
  2. Each motif uses approximately 155 yards of worsted weight yarn. I used skeins of Caron Simply soft for the example blocks. The treble clef motif uses about 163 yards.
  3. This Pattern is made up of blocks with different music motifs, you can put them together any way you wish to make any size blanket. If you would like you could add plain blocks in between the motifs or make more than one of each motif. The picture in the example is just the 12 motifs.
  4. All twelve motifs together make a large baby blanket or an afghan. 24 motifs are large enough for a twin size bed.
  5. The SC edging is just a suggestion. Use any type of edging that you would like to add your own personal touch to this design.
  6. The chain 1 does not count as a stitch in this pattern
  7. For each Motif you start out with a chain 40, or you may also you a Foundation HDC with 39 HDC in the foundation chain.

    Hi Kris
    My name is Lori and I st started the music notes pattern and just have a quick question. You mentioned that he bobble stitch is worked on the wrong side. Which is the wrong side?..lol plus after the Bobble it’s the HFC in next stitch right? I’ve been crocheting for years and get confused right from wrong side😅

    1. Kris

      Hi Lori, the “wrong side” in any of my bobble stitch patterns means the back of the piece.
